Danilo Medina’s brother in law defends his mega-contracting with the state

The brother-in-law of former President Danilo Medina, Maxy Montilla understands his deals with the Medina administration were legal. In an interview with El Dia, he said he has been a government contractor in the electricity sector since 2004. From 2004 to 2008, Leonel Fernández was President and Danilo Medina was his Minister of the Presidency.

Montilla said during the Fernández government he sold RD$2 billion to the state. He argued he won the tenders because he offered better prices after making contacts with suppliers in China.

Montilla argues that when Medina became President he continued to sell to the state because the Procurement Law did not impede him from doing so. He said the power utilities were not directed by his relatives.

The former general manager of EdeEste utility was Luis Ernesto de León, who happened to be the husband of a sister to former President Danilo Medina. Andres Astacio, coordinator of the power utilities board, told Alicia Ortega in an interview for El Informe that just in EdeEste
irregularities in contracting have been found for RD$18 billion regarding to companies tied to the Medina-Montilla family.

In his understanding, the Procurement Law only impeded him from contracting with the Office of the First Lady or the Presidency.

The stories on the companies related to Juan Alexis Medina Sánchez, younger brother of former President Danilo Medina Sánchez, and Maxy Gerardo Montilla Sierra, brother of former First Lady Candida Montilla Sierra are making headlines for the mega sales main to power utilities (EdeSur, EdeEste and EdeNorte) and the government electricity transmission entitity (ETED).
