
The nation’s largest trauma hospital, the Dario Contreras in East Santo Domingo, reported that they received more patients for gunshot and knife wounds than for traffic accidents for the first time in its history. In one incident, the hospital even reported that a vehicle entered the emergency driveway at high speed and crashed into an ambulance. The vehicle was bringing a gunshot victim to the hospital. And the hospital was busy.
At one time over the Christmas holiday there were 16 ambulances in the parking lot. People interviewed at the trauma center said they were busy for sure, but not nearly as much as in former years.
