Medics are forecasting a considerable surge in Covid-19 infections for January 2021. The spikes are expected given that Dominicans are meeting family and friends for the Christmas and New Year holidays. In public spaces, mask-wearing is the norm, not so in gatherings in restaurants and at homes. The gatherings are common for the wealthy and the poor.

The president of the Dominican Society of Infectology, Rita Rojas disputed the recent appreciation by President Luis Abinader that the disease is under control. Abinader made the statement in an interview with El Pais, the leading Spanish media.

In December, patients requiring hospitalization in Intensive Care Units have met with difficulties in finding space. Likewise, the number of hospitalized patients has increased. The demand for tests has risen considerably.

N Digital reports there are differences regarding the government’s Covid-19 actions within the Health Cabinet presided by Vice President Raquel Peña. The cabinet would be meeting today to determine if the same measures applied for the Christmas holidays will continue for the New Year long weekend.
