Deputy investigated for violence against police woman

The ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) announced an investigation into the case of deputy Sadoky Duarte accused of slapping a woman policeman, Disleidy Heredia Figueroa, who had detained him during a curfew operation in Cotuí on Sunday, 27 December 2020.

Duarte is a legislator for the PRM for the province of Sánchez Ramírez. He faces possible expulsion from the party.

The legislator denies the charge. “I was the one who was attacked,” he said in a statement. He said he is asking the Chamber of Deputies to create a commission to investigate the situation. He said the encounter occurred at 5pm in front of his residence. He said the agent acted aggressively. He denied he slapped her in the face. Duarte said he has always been a defender and guarantor of women’s rights.

In a new development, the police agent announced she will sue the deputy.
