The man responsible for the Dominican Republic women’s volleyball team being top 10 in the world understands what has been done for volleyball can be replicated for other sports. As a step in this direction, Cristóbal Marte calls for better accountability of public funds delivered to sports federations. He also wants the government to restore facilities so that businesses and people can fund sports and write this off from their taxes.
“I am not saying that the Dominican sports movement is not transparent. What I am saying is that Dominican sports is a major organized chaos that is controlled by those who generate high profits,” he told Diario Libre in an interview published on Monday, 28 December 2020.
Marte says that since he began to receive public funds for the volleyball programs some ten years ago, he has presented a report on the use of the funds. He says that sports federations have been receiving government monthly allotments since the Hipólito Mejía administration (2000-2004), but how these use the funds is not made public. He said producing a report is not enough. “Publish this so that everyone can know,” he said.
