
The Ministry of Public Works announced the infrastructure works it has planned for this 2021. Public Works Minister Deligne Ascención mentioned works to improve vehicular traffic, small projects in rural areas, maintenance of major roads, streets and avenues contemplated in the Strategic Infrastructure Development Plan. He was the keynote speaker for the 58th anniversary of the Dominican Engineers and Architects Association (Codia) on 13 January 2021. Ascención accepted the invitation made by Codia president, engineer Francisco Marte.
The minister announced a new bridge will be built over the Ozama River to connect Santo Domingo East with the National District. The new bridge will connect Manuela Diez street in the National District and Puerto Rico street in Ensanche Ozama in eastern Santo Domingo.
He announced works would begin to extend the Ecological Avenue where it connects with the Caucedo Multimodal Port. Other projects announced are the construction of the Los Alcarrizos bypass and extending the Jacobo Majluta Avenue until it connects with the Duarte Highway. Road solutions to the traffic congestion at República de Colombia Avenue are also contemplated for 2021.
Ascención said road works will continue to correct vehicle traffic congestion at the intersection of 27 de Febrero Avenue with the Plaza de la Bandera rotunda and the Isabel Aguiar Avenue.
Also planned is the construction of new roadworks connect Av. Charles De Gaulle from the Sabana Perdida intersection with the community of La Victoria.
He announced the Duarte Highway leading from Santo Domingo to Santiago would be modernized. He said the Navarette Beltway and the new Amber Highway to Puerto Plata are in the 2021 plan.
He said the Northern Beltway (Circunvalación) will be extended and the Carretera Turística that heads north will be completed, both in Santiago province.
He said the government is investing heavily in road maintenance and signage. He said these projects employ thousands in cities and rural communities. He stressed the importance of maintaining rural roads as these facilitate farmers reaching the markets where they sell their goods.
