DR vies to become mecca for gaming sports, CapCom Cup set for Hard Rock

In these Covid-19 pandemic days, sports tourism is every day more filling the void left by concerts at east coast hotels. For instance, the international gaming community is discovering the advantages of a sanitary bubble in a Punta Cana resort. CapCom Cup 2020 is the latest sports event to announce it will meet at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana, a former leader in concerts and shows.

The event will take place at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana from 19 to 21 February 2021. This is the grand finale marking the end to the 2020 season when more than 4,000 players have competed in the Capcom Pro Tour Online. As reported, the players battled through 18 online “all-or-nothing” qualifying premiers, with the goal of making it to Capcom Cup 2020, now to be held in Punta Cana.

The Street Fighter League World Championship will take place on 19 February, with the two best US teams and two best Japanese teams facing off for the world title. 20 February will be Capcom Cup Top 20 and 21 February will be Capcom Cup Grand Finals.

The total prize pool for Capcom Cup 2020 will be in excess of US$200,000 (not including the appearance fee). Capcom Cup 2020 will stream all events across the Capcom Fighters Network, including channels on Twitch, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.

Hard Rock was chosen after an extensive process of reviewing locations around the globe. The resort was selected because of its facilities, travel friendly environment, and stringent Covid-19 protocols. There is a strict no spectator and no fan attendance policy in effect. Any non-event personnel will be denied entry by venue security staff.

As reported in Diario Libre, Dominicans first made their mark in e-sports when Saul Mena became the first Dominican to win the prize of US$250,000 in the 2017 championship. Enthusiasm for the sport picked up steam in the country after that unexpected win. Mena (MenaRD) will be competing in the Punta Cana championship. Other Dominicans who have registered are Christopher Rodríguez (SPM_Caba) and Yoryi Bueno (DRMandrake).

Damaso García is director of operations for Blink Esports, of the organizers. He told Diario Libre: “One of the plans of Blink ESports is to convert the eastern region of our country into tourism for electronic sports.”
