
Late last week, the largest Dominican cacao exporter, Risek Group, delivered several tons of organic cacao to the French company, Grain de Sail SAS, from Morlaix on the Brittany coast of France. The French company prides itself on its organic products, and the Risek Group, which exports about 80% of Dominican chocolate, was happy to comply.
But that is not the whole story. The export was shipped on the two-masted schooner named Grain de Sail V1, a modern, newly build boat that reflects the company’s interest in reducing its carbon footprint.
The Grain de Sil V1 sailed two months ago, delivering a cargo of organic wines to New York before heading south to the Dominican port of Puerto Plata.
