A Catholic group sponsored a contest to choose the best documentaries that explain why the Dominican Republic should approve the three exceptions to the ban on abortion. The Alianza Cristiana Dominicana (ACD) organized the contest. The group is an organization created in Santiago de los Caballeros by women belonging to different religious denominations to serve as the voice of Catholics that are in favor of the three grounds for abortion.
The contestants shared ethical and theological arguments to substantiate why Congress should vote in favor of the three exceptions. The religious alliance seeks to dispute the Evangelical Christian and Roman Catholic churches’ echelons that are blatantly against any exceptions.
Lounelsi Mateo, from Acento.com.do, won first place with the report “Tres Causales y Código Penal, un debate de 23 años.”
The second place went to “Las Tres Causales, ¿aborto sin fundamentos bíblicos?” by Odalis Castillo, Juan Carlos Navarro and Franklin Nin that was broadcast on Nuria Piera’s investigative journalism program.
Experts in theology and biblical scholars explained in that video that abortion based on the three grounds is not forbidden textually in the Bible and that the controversial points on this issue are the result of the personal interpretations that many people have made of the Bible.
Third place went to Juan Carlos Gonzáles of El Mitin for “El cuerpo de Lucia.”
The Catholic and Evangelical Christian churches in the Dominican Republic over the years have strongly lobbied against any kind of abortion in the Dominican Republic. Groups in favor of the three exceptions argue that the present situation endangers the health of women in general and especially poor women.
