Merchants say prices for mainstays are lower

The head of the Dominican Federation of Merchants (FDC), Ivan Garcia, says that prices for many essential food products are dropping. He attributed this to initiatives carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture under Agriculture Minister Limber Cruz Lopez.

Prices of garlic, onions, beans, potatoes, plantains have been dropping. García says this is also because the Ministry has issued permits for imports to supply the local demand. One example offered by Garcia was the lower price for garlic. At one time it was selling for close to US$6 a pound (RD$300) and is now being sold to consumers for a bit less than US$2.

Garcia also noted the lower price for poultry, which had spiked at nearly RD$100 per pound. And, fortunately, rice, has also dropped in price.
