
Environment Minister Orlando Jorge Mera told reporters last week that his teams had stopped two sand processors operating at the Nizao River in San Cristóbal. Their rudimentary and unlawful equipment was confiscated and removed from the area by members of the Ministry’s enforcement personnel. As reported, one of the sand sifters was even camouflaged in an attempt to hide it from patrols.
According to Jorge Mera, there are cartels operating in different areas of the country, exploiting the riverbeds for cheap building materials like sand and gravel. He promised to “enforce the law.”
