Magdy Esteban Martínez Soliman, director of the Spanish International Cooperation Agency (AECID), visited for two days this week. A United Nations expert on development policies, he became the head of the AECID office in September 2020. Previously, he was the representative of the United Nations Development Agency in Barbados.
During his visit, Martínez announced Spain will allocate EUR45 million (around US$53 million) for cooperation projects in the Dominican Republic. The amount would almost double the present funding for cooperation in the country.
Martínez says the budget would be allocated primarily to two large projects. One is to support productive sectors and the other is to support the water sector, he told EFE in an interview during his stay in the country.
He said Spain sees the Dominican Republic as a very important partner in the political, economic and cooperation areas. He had praise for how the Dominican government has handled the Covid-19 pandemic and the management of the crisis.
