Few public schools are prepared for in-person learning

The Secretary-General of the Dominican Association of Public School Teachers (ADP) Rafael Feliz said that the Ministry of Education had not completed the necessary sprucing in the majority of the schools in the 48 municipalities authorized to open in-person learning.

The Ministry of Education has concentrated efforts on developing remote learning programs rather than traditional maintenance for normal classroom learning. Parent pressures led the Ministry of Education to authorize in person voluntary and gradual return to classes in 48 municipalities in areas where the Covid-19 positivity rate is below 5%.

He said in Monte Plata, only 20% of the schools authorized were certified to start by the Ministry of Public Health. The schools have basic problems, such as inoperant toilets.

He said the decision to return to classes was improvised and carried out to please the media.
