
The Customs Agency (DGA) reports that exports in March 2021 were US$1.11 billion, 36.69% more than in March 2020, at the start of the pandemic. Exports were US$299 billion more this March 2021 than for the same month last year.
Free zone exports were up 42.8%. Best performing exports were cigars, up 94.29%; jewelry up 55.42%; electrical circuit breakers, up 51.96%; and medical instruments, up 26.54%.
Gold exports grew by 22.71%. Likewise, sugar exports were up 91.37%, cacao exports increased 33.49% and banana exports were up 21.43%.
DGA general director Eduardo Sanz Lovatón attributes the increases to the concerted efforts of the public and private sectors. Sanz Lovatón said that the DGA is under a modernization overhaul with new technologies to streamline processes and offer better service to users. He said the plan is part of the efforts to turn the Dominican Republic into the trade logistics hub for the Caribbean and Central American region.
