Vice President says Chinese vaccines are on the way here

Vice President of the Republic Raquel Peña announced that a plane carrying 500,000 doses of vaccines has taken off from China and is expected to arrive Wednesday, 21 April 2021, in the afternoon. The vaccines are needed to continue the vaccination program in the Dominican Republic. The vaccines contracted to Oxford/AstraZeneca, Pfizer and the amounts agreed with the WHO/Covax facility have not yet arrived.

The Vice President said the plane will land here at 4:30pm via Brussels, Belgium. Peña indicated that with the new batch of vaccines, the country will resume vaccinating people over 68 years of age.

Furthermore, she said that any person who as of Thursday, goes to a vaccination center accompanying an adult of 75+ can also receive their vaccination, regardless of their age.

Thanks to vaccines sold and sent by China, the Dominican Republic has almost completed the first phase of vaccinations to those over 70+ and the medical staff. The Health Cabinet had earlier announced the batch from China would be for another one million vaccines.

The arrival of the vaccines will coincide with the visit of Admiral Craig Faller of the US South Command.
