500,000 Sinovac vaccines arrive

Vice President Raquel Peña, Public Health Minister Daniel Rivera and China ambassador Zhang Run were at Las Americas International on Wednesday, 21 April 2021 in the afternoon to receive the batch of 500,000 Chinese Sinovac/Coronavac vaccines that arrived. The doses arrived on board a TUIFly flight via Brussels, Belgium. The shipment also included 2 million syringes purchased by the Dominican government through the Banco de Reservas.

Public Health Minister Daniel Rivera says that the vaccines will be used for first doses for those 68+. The inoculation drive is set for Thursday and Friday, 22-23 April 2021 nationwide. Likewise, those accompanying a 75+ years old person to get vaccinated, may also be vaccinated, regardless of age. Second doses are also being applied.

The Dominican Republic has been able to advance in its phase 1 that covers the most vulnerable persons, including medical staff, military, police and public school teachers, thanks to the delivery of Sinovac vaccines purchased from China. The Oxford/AstraZeneca and Pfizer, and other manufacturers that are part of the WHO/Covax Facility have not complied with the delivery dates.
