Public transport drivers will begin to be vaccinated against Covid-19 starting this Tuesday, 27 April 2021, the government announced in a press release. Presidency Minister Lisandro Macarrulla said that the drivers are highly vulnerable to getting infected. The drivers of all ages now have priority in the National Vaccination Plan. The Presidency says the government is preparing for the “definite reopening” of the economy.
“We have decided to vaccinate public transport drivers because we understand that it is of utmost importance that the transport sector is immunized. This guarantees the mitigation of the virus in the population, since an important part of the citizens commute in these public transport vehicles,” he said.
The vaccination of the transportation sector will begin this Tuesday, 27 April 2021, in Greater Santo Domingo. It will be extended nationwide through a protocol and call implemented by the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant).
The plan covers drivers and staff of so-called shared taxis (públicos), buses and minibuses. Also, all members of the federations that group the transporters.
Since last week, the authorities announced they are expanding the vaccination categories to include journalists and tourism workers of all ages and people over 60 years of age. The vaccination plan is also open to health care workers and school teachers.
