Brother of deputy arrested in Miami incriminated in drug trafficking ring case

Prosecutors from the Southern District of Florida’s International Narcotics and Money Laundering Section handling the case of Dominican deputy Miguel Gutierrez Diaz are also accusing his brother. Miguel Emilio Gutiérrez Díaz (alias El Alemán) is included in the case accused of the same charges of drug trafficking, as reported in El Dia. Others in the same case are brothers Endy de Jesús Núñez Mármol (alias El Fuerte) and Danny Núñez Mármol.

58-year old Gutiérrez Díaz was arrested on Monday, 17 May 2021 when he arrived at Miami International Airport from the Dominican Republic. He is accused of being part of a transnational drug trafficking ring that operated in the Dominican Republic, Colombia and the United States.

Gutiérrez Díaz was elected deputy for the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) during the 7 July 2020 presidential and congressional election. When he was a pre-candidate, the Central Electoral Board (JCE) had alerted he did not abide with the requirement to present legal receipts for his campaign spending. No further action was taken by JCE or the political party he represented.

The pre-trial detention hearing will take place on Friday, 21 May 2021 in Miami.

It is the first time that an active Dominican legislator is arrested abroad.
