The Supreme Court of Justice is sending the cases of the suspect corruption by Chamber of Accountability (Cámara de Cuentas) members to ordinary justice. The investigations into the Snail Case (Operación Caracol) are carried out by the Specialized Prosecutors Office for the Prosecution of Administrative Corruption (Pepca) now that the auditors are out of government. The Operación Caracol involves the former members of the Chamber of Accountability
The announcement comes after the judge of the privileged jurisdiction of the SCJ, María Garabito, declared herself incompetent. Garabito ruled that the investigation against the former president of the Chamber of Accountability, Hugo Alvarez, and other members, be heard by ordinary justice because the auditors are no longer government officials.
The coordinating judge for National District Courts, Kenya Romero, must now designate a court to continue the accusatory procedures.
