The special committee appointed by the Senate to choose the nation’s ombudsman, alternates and deputies, completed the interviews of the three candidates for ombudsman on Thursday, 20 May 2021. The interviews were streamed to the general public. Each person had five minutes to present their biography and the reasons why they should be chosen and five minutes to answer questions posed by the committee members
The order of the assessments was Fidel Ernesto Santana Mejía, best known as the president of the Frente Amplio political movement; former deputy Henry Merán, best known as the spokesperson for former President Leonel Fernández in Congress; and Pablo Ulloa, an independent candidate.
Fidel Santana and Henry Meran argued that their political past does not disqualify them from winning the position during their presentations.
