Diario Libre editorial: How to correct the big cases if they ignore the small?

In its back page editorial, Diario Libre on 21 May 2021 wonders how the Police can tackle crime in the country if it continues to allow the hassle of windshield cleaners on city streets. It also wonders, if the Police cannot ensure the safety of the Mirador del Sur park, how is it going to ensure national security.

The editorialist also wonders if the government allows its officers to not comply with the requirement to present their statements of worth, how is it going to combat administrative corruption. “Impunity makes us all mad, but what about lenience, that lax way of confronting attitudes that morally affect the nation?,” writes the editorialist.

The editorialist continues:
“The President warned, threatened to punish, but it is known that middle-ranking government officials are looking the other way.

“Worse still, in the Congress and in the city councils, there are those in office who believe they are of a different category and are not concerned with the norms imposed on the common people.

“The broken window theory explains it all.”
