Audit shows former director of Port Authority was a very big spender

When taking the position as the new director of the Port Authority (Apordom), Jean Luis Rodríguez announced he would not be using the credit card assigned to the director that had a limit of US$10,000 a month. He revealed he received the government agency with a RD$1.5 billion deficit, of which RD$800 million corresponded to the severance payments paid to outgoing personnel.

Now, lawyer Guido Gómez Mazara, announced he has filed a case for corruption in office against the former director, Victor Gómez Casanova with the Attorney General Office’s Specialized Office for Administrative Corruption (Pepca). Gómez Mazara bases his claims of corruption on an audit carried out by the Controller General’s Office.

Gómez Casanova is accused of prevarication and extortion of public officials, criminal association, money laundering and tax fraud.

The Alicia Ortega investigative journalism TV program on Channel 9 on Monday, 31 May 2021 looked into the widespread irregularities at Apordom during the management by Gómez Casanova.
