Government reaches out to relieve producers and consumers

Current price increases of many farm products, the 10.5% 12-month inflation rate, and the prospects of ever increasing food prices for staples such as poultry, beef and wheat products have pushed the administration of President Luis Abinader to re-think his government’s farmers market program. As a result, the government now is pushing forward farm to consumer programs.

According to announcements made recently, the program will expand from 12 to 36 locations where folks can buy produce and other agricultural products at better prices than in supermarkets.

The Saturday events will be held at the various locations used by the Dominican Institute for Price Stabilization (Inespre). There will also be an increase from 5 to 15 the farmer’s markets held on Wednesdays.

The markets will be held in Herrera, West Santo Domingo, Bani, San Juan de la Maguana, Azua, Santiago, El Seibo, Barahona, San Pedro de Macoris, Cotui, La Vega, Dajabon and Hato Mayor.
