Government motivates people to get vaccinated to end curfew

The Health Cabinet challenges the people in the Dominican Republic to get fully vaccinated sooner than later. The Presidency announced on 3 July that it would consider removing curfew restrictions in municipalities where 70% of the people have at least two doses. 62% of the people over 18 years have received at least one dose.

The national average of fully vaccinated people is at 38.6% as of 2 July 2021. La Altagracia province leads in percentage of persons with one dose with 99.9%, and a fully vaccinated population percentage of 59.7%. Punta Cana, the country’s main vacation destination, is located in La Altagracia province. The tourism industry is the main employer in the province.

La Romana, another touristic province, has 71% of its population with one dose and 38.4% with two doses. Puerto Plata, another touristic province, has 63.7% with one vaccine and 46.5% with two. Greater Santo Domingo has vaccinated 67.5% of its population with one vaccine and 41.2% with two.

In the Dominican Republic the government has secured sufficient inventories of vaccines to apply at least 100,000 doses per day, but the number of persons getting the vaccine has been declining. The vaccination plan in the Dominican Republic is open to all age groups.

The mayor of Santiago urged the government to allow the second largest city of the country to fully reopen. Yet, Santiago provinces is in the bottom 10 of the provinces with the lowest number of fully vaccinated. In Santiago 55% of the population has received one dose and 33.3% have received two doses. Minister of Public Health Daniel Rivera is from Santiago as is the coordinator of the Health Cabinet, Vice President Raquel Peña.

Minister of Public Health Daniel Rivera sat for the third jab, the Pfizer booster over the weekend. The Dominican authorities are recommending the third jab to enhance immunity. The government reported that in the first week of availability of the booster shots, around 3,000 had sat for the Pfizer vaccine shot.

Around 88% of the Dominican population has been vaccinated with the Sinovac vaccine. Health authorities are recommending the third dose after new variants caused a spike in intensive care unit hospitalizations among those who have had two vaccines.
