President Abinader to attend Glasgow Climate Change Conference

Environment Minister Orlando Jorge Mera announced President Luis Abinader would attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 26 ) scheduled for 31 October to 12 November 2021 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Jorge Mera says the President’s participation recognizes that climate change is only second to the Covid-pandemic as a lead threat to humanity. Jorge Mera mentioned beach erosion and sargassum as two effects of climate change in the Dominican Republic.

Jorge Mera was interviewed by Héctor Herrera Cabral for D´Agenda on Sunday, 15 August 2021 on Telesistema, Channel 11.

He explained that frequently the population doesn’t realize that as an island-country, climate change affects the nation more than other countries. He warned that there is a firm decision of the government of President Luis Abinader to clean up the hydrographic basins of the country. He spoke of the Ozama River and Isabela River and insisted that clean up has begun in the Ozama River and in the medium term all the companies that pollute this basin will have to remove their operations. He was emphatic that the decision adopted by the Ministry of Environment that orders the Estrella del Mar barges to close the operations in the Ozama River will not be maintained.
