Something out of Ripley’s Believe it or Not! It appears that the Dominican government does not hold title to the plot of land that houses the Presidential Palace. Located between Dr. Delgado and 30 de Marzo streets, east and west, and Pedro Henriquez Ureña Avenue and Moises Garcia street, north and south, the building was built by dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo in 1947 on some land without any owners, lands ceded by the city of Ciudad Trujillo, and land along 30 de Marzo, not all of which was properly obtained by the government. It appears that there are at least seven lots that face the 30 de Marzo which are still registered to private individuals and a major portion of the western part that belongs to ….nobody!
Jose Ignacio Paliza, the Administrative Minister of the Presidency is heading the work to acquire the properties along 30 de Marzo in a proper fashion. Also in need of proper acquisition is the land where Dr. Baez Street runs, which previously bisected the grounds of the Presidential Palace. There will be a lot of surveying. The names of the owner of the lots along 30 de Marzo have not been released.
