DR shares experiences in coral restoration with Honduras and Costa Rica

The ministries of Economy and Foreign Relations signed an agreement with the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) and the embassies of Costa Rica and Honduras in the Dominican Republic for innovation in the conservation and restoration of coral reefs — “Aplicación de herramientas innovadoras para la conservación y restauración de arrecifes de coral”.

The initiative seeks to promote the exchange of experiences to strengthen and create organizations and structures for the management and conservation of coral reefs in Honduras with the technical backing of Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic.

The Ministry of Economy says that a technical mission is visiting through 31 August to share local best practices and experiences.

Olaya Dotel, deputy minister for international cooperation at the Ministry of Economy explains that the Dominican Republic has vast experience in the application of monitoring actions and assessment of coral nurseries and the lessons learned will be shared with Costa Rica and Honduras. The initiative is aligned with Goal 14 of the UN Sustainable Development Agenda that calls to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources. Dotel said the initiative is part of Dominican efforts to contribute to environmental sustainability, protection and conservation of biodiversity to reduce the impacts of climate change.

Jose Luis Morillo, director of international cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Relations participated for the Ministry of Foreign Relations. Laura Guzman, technical advisor of the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ).

Also participating in the event were: Luis Diego Garro Montoya, in charge of commercial affairs for the Embassy of Costa Rica in the Dominican Republic; José Antonio Lorenzana Reyes, counsellor minister for the Embassy of Honduras in the DR; Nina Lysenko, director of marine resources at the Ministry of Environment; Rita Sellares, executive director of Fundemar. Also for Honduras: Daniela Mejía Cruz, executive director of the Utila Coral Foundation (FUC); John Alonzo, research coordinator, Utila Coral Foundation (FUC); Gabriela Ochoa, programs director at the Roatan Marine Park; Damaris Dueñas, researcher, Roatan Marine Park; Aric Bickel, technology expert for Secore International; Miles McGonigle, project engineer, Secore International and Eduardo Avila Pech, roving restoration technician, Secore International.
