The recently created Ministry of Housing that merged National Housing Institute (Invi) with the Office of Supervising Engineers for State Projects (Oisoe), has announced a sweeping program of construction that includes low-cost housing, schools, trauma centers and cancer centers.
Housing Minister Carlos Bonilla Sanchez says the Abinader administration plans to build trauma and oncological centers so patients do not have to head to Santo Domingo and Santiago for treatment.
Explaining the program called “My House,” the minister noted that the government is prepared to finance 60% of the cost for new home owners. For those who cannot afford to make monthly loan payments, the new ministry has a plan these can sign up for and help repair their current dwelling.
During the interview with Listin Diario, Minister Bonilla Sanchez remarked that President Luis Abinader does not believe in giving away housing to the poor. He says people appreciate less what is free. He observed people must pay something to value what they are getting. He also noted: “When the time comes to live in community, you have to know how to do so, and if you are given a house, there is no interest in learning how to live in a community.”
