President Abinader backs Covid-19 booster shot

President Luis Abinader is a strong supporter of the Pfizer booster shot now available in the Dominican Republic. 82% of all jabs here have been of Sinovac/Sinopharm or AstraZeneca vaccines. The Pfizer third shot is recommended to bolster the immunity of seniors and those with known vulnerabilities. The vaccination is available at demand in larger vaccination centers nationwide.

Speaking in Puerto Plata over the weekend, President Luis Abinader said he is sure the booster shot has saved lives. President Abinader has said that so far no person with the booster shot has been hospitalized with Covid-19. The booster shot was made available after hospital directors alerted that several persons with the two dosages of vaccine were arriving in serious conditions to the hospitals and many had died.

“Today around 30 countries are now applying the third dose and urging their populations to get the booster,” said the President. He said the Dominican Republic was the third country in the world to include the booster shot in its National Vaccination Plan. The government has urged persons over 60 years of age get the third vaccine.

The World Health Organization has called for a global moratorium on Covid-19 booster shots, in the hopes of making more vaccines available to give more people the first two shots.

Israel is one of these countries, where most of the citizens were vaccinated with two doses of Pfizer vaccine and yet is seeing cases of people seriously ill with Covid-19. Israel has been one of the first countries around the world to authorize the booster shots. As reported in the Jerusalem Post, preliminary reports in Israel back the health authorities’ decision to make the booster shot available in Israel.

In the Dominican Republic, M=medical authorities attribute to the aggressive vaccination campaign the control of the Covid-19. The country is experiencing lows in active cases, deaths, new cases and positivity rates nationwide. The health authorities are closely monitoring to early on check for the appearance of the feared Delta variant to impede a new outbreak.
