
The private-sector-backed effort to build the Dominican Republic into a future basketball powerhouse are showing fruit. On Friday, 28 August 2021, the DR defeated Brazil to win a slot in the FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup that will take place in Spain. The DR team played Brazil in Xalapa, Mexico.
The U-16 national team defeated Brazil 74-66 to advance to the semifinal round of the FIBA U-16 Championship of the Americas.
While losing at the end, the DR team again impressed fans with a 74-76 loss to Argentina that advanced to the tournament’s finals.
La Nucia and Alicante, Spain are the host cities for the 16-team U-17 World Championship to be held in 2022 at a date yet to be announced.
