Ban on catch and sale of parrotfish and conch; illegal catches seized

Together with the Navy and the Dominican Council of Fisheries and Aquaculture, the Ministry of Environment announced more than half a ton of parrotfish and conch were seized in operations in northeastern Samana. The banned species were confiscated on two fishing boats. The owners will be sent to justice. The authorities intercepted the 836 pounds of parrotfish and 623 pounds of conch. The action sought to enforce Decree 418-21 on protected species.

Environmentally-aware consumers should make sure they are not getting parrot fish when ordering fish in a restaurant. They should also not order conch even if available at the restaurant. There is a ban on the sale of conch from 1 July to 31 October 2021.

Environment Minister Orlando Jorge Mera urged fishermen to refrain from catching these species that are vital for the maintenance of the beaches and health of coral reefs.
