
Coinciding with the 76th UN Assembly General in New York, four past presidents of Latin America are meeting in the same city for a two-day event to debate the future of the region. The Global Forum on Latin America and the Caribbean will take place 23 and 24 September 2021 in New York.
The former presidents will share six panels to discuss key regional issues in person or through virtual platforms.
The other former presidents that have confirmed are Ricardo Lagos of Chile, Ernesto Samper of Colombia and Laura Chinchilla of Costa Rica.
Also participating is secretary general of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro and the executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Alicia Bárcena.
The event is a brainstorm of former President Fernandez. It is organized by the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode), presided by Fernández, and its sister institution in the United States, the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD).
It is also organized by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA). It has the collaboration of the Institute of Latin American Studies at Columbia University (ILAS).
The focus this year will be on the pandemic and social repercussions in the region. The former presidents will look into the current fiscal pressures given the additional spending to deal with the pandemic.
The elections in Costa Rica, Colombia and Brazil will also be discussed, and solidarity and regional cooperation mechanisms.
The two-day meeting with a look at the future of Latin America in a global context.
Former President Leonel Fernandez is the president of the People’s Force political party, a spinoff of the former ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD). Fernandez is eligible to run for President of the Dominican Republic in the 2024 election.
