
Members of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) were majority in the three-day La Romana Hilton outing to provide a comfortable setting for the legislators to study the Penal Code. Diario Libre reports that of the 24 senators and deputies that participated, 11 were from the ruling PRM party.
Diario Libre reports that the legislators left as is the abortion clauses that only allow for an exception when the life of the mother is in danger and a physician approves this. The legislators also agreed to increase from 10 to 20 years the expiring of government corruption crimes. A Supreme Court judge has ruled that corruption crimes do not expire. Regarding the issue of discrimination, a paragraph was added to establish that freedom of conscience and religion will prevail, subject to public order and respect to good customs.
As reported, legislators Faride Raful (PRM-National District), Antonio Taveras (PRM-Santo Domingo) and Jose Horacio Rodríguez (Alianza Pais-National District) will present a dissident amended Penal Code to the floor of the Senate and Chamber of Deputies.
