
The Public School Teachers Union (ADP) is one of the largest professional unions in the country, simply because all public teachers are members and the ADP is funded with deductions from teachers’ wages. As a result, the ADP has an annual budget of more than RD$400 million. The ADP is also highly politicized.
In the union’s recent vote for its president, Eduardo Hidalgo, the candidate for the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) is the winner, according to the preliminary voting count. Hidalgo competed against Juan Núñez, the candidate backed by the People’s Force (FP) of former President Leonel Fernández, and Xiomara Guante, the incumbent president, who had the backing of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). Former President Danilo Medina, who is now the president of the PLD, was so encouraged by the win that he celebrated, saying the PLD had been on vacation and now was back to work to claim the 2024 presidential elections.
