The Central Electoral Board (JCE), the government body in charge of the general elections in the Dominican Republic, has issued Resolution 28/2021 alerting that the pre-election campaign period has not yet opened. The resolution gives guidelines and controls for partisan campaigning and the use of social media by the political parties. The JCE says that the pre-campaign to choose the political candidates for the May 2024 general elections does not officially open until 2 July 2023.
The JCE says the resolution complies with Art. 41 of the Political Parties Law No. 33-18.
Until July 2023, political parties are only authorized to celebrate activities in closed places. Street propaganda is outlawed until then. The propaganda can be placed inside the party locations. Public spaces can not be used for political activities until the authorized start of the campaign. The same applies to the using of social media – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube included until the start of the campaign.
Recently, the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), central figures of the leading opposition party have been holding political campaign activities. Most notable was the large congregation held by the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) Sunday, 17 October 2021, when former President Danilo Medina announced that the party was alive and kicking, that it had just been on a spree or long partying outing, but after the “vacation” was now back at work to return to the presidency in 2024.
