Haitians are filling up in Dominican border provinces

El Nuevo Diario reports complaints of the people in southwestern border province of Pedernales that say that Haitians are filling up all sorts of recipients for resale in Haiti and this is causing a shortage in supplies. Haiti is affected by a major shortage of fuel.

Residents and businesses in Pedernales are concern there will soon be a shortage of fuel that will affect the locals.

El Nuevo Diario sources say that the Haitians come from Anse-au-Pitre in Haiti with trucks, tanks, and recipients to load gasoline, propane gas, and diesel to take back to Haiti.

El Caribe reports that thousands of Haitians have been crossing to Elías Piña province to stock up on petrol. The newspaper highlights how the lack of fuel in Haiti is affected medical services, among others.

Dominican authorities are reportedly taking action given the extraordinary demand from Haitians that are crossing the border to stock up on fuel. A spokesman for the gas station association in the area said the fuel stations have the duty to dispense fuel to all who arrive to the stations in orderly and regular manner. But at the same time, the source indicated that the authorities have the duty to limit the purchases to avoid shortages or a black market in the area, EFE news release explains. Altagracia Salazar says the $2,000 gourdes or RD$1,200 the gallon in Haiti. Reports are that the gas stations are selling the fuel to the Haitians at a premium. This affects the supply available for Dominicans who pay just the real pump prices.

Fuel supplies in Haiti have worsened as the gangs take control of the cities and roads. Several Dominican truckers have been held hostage for around three weeks. Most cargo from the Dominican Republic to Haiti is now being transferred at the border to Haitian truckers. The kidnappings of truckers have been happening since 2012.

A three-day strike is called in Haiti to protest as the population protests the violence and fuel shortages.
