Three firefighters died when they were trapped in the flames that totaled the Casa Mora store in downtown La Vega. The firemen were inside when part of the roof collapsed. The firemen were identified as Olvis de Jesús Farias, Yunior Concepción and José Mojica.
The fire in the commercial establishment, an old Victorian style building, started around 4pm on 27 October 2021 and quickly spread to the store’s textile warehouse. Around 125 members of the La Vega Fire Department and nearby municipalities participated in the effort to put out the fire.
Julio Toribio, spokesman for the La Vega Fire Department, said the three firemen were in the center and could not make it to the front. When the fire caught on in the back, the men were trapped.
Members of the emergency services worked around the clock to prevent the fire from spreading to other premises. Casa Mora is located on José Núñez de Cáceres street.
