
Ministers of public health of Ibero-American countries met on 28 October 2021 to coordinate measures to strengthen health systems and to promote multilateral actions to help overcome the Covid-19 health crisis in Latin America, Portugal and Spain.
The Dominican Republic organizes the XVI Ibero-American Conference of Ministers of Public Health this year as it is acting as Pro Tempore Secretariat for the 22-country IberoAmerican Summit and the Iberoamerican General Health Secretariat (Segib). The countries agreed by consensus to create the Ibero-American Epidemiological Observatory whose mission is to coordinate and strengthen the region’s existing epidemiological networks and capacities.
The goal for Latin America is for 40% of the population to be fully vaccinated for Covid-19 by the end of the year, says Marcos Pinta Gama, spokesman for the Iberoamerican General Health Secretariat (Segib).
In the Dominican Republic upwards of 60% of the population is fully vaccinated. The country is working to vaccinate 70% of the population.
The Dominican representation at the event was headed by Vice President Raquel Peña, who presides the country’s Health Cabinet, and Public Health Minister Daniel Rivera.
