President Luis Abinader fired the governor of Samana, Elsa de León who was too frank. Frustrated with the thousands of residents in Samana who have not yet been vaccinated, the governor had stated last week:
“I will hold a party for each of those who were not vaccinated and died of Covid.”
Samaná has one of the lowest vaccination rates. Only 52% of the population has two vaccines. Nevertheless, Samana has one of the lowest positivity rates with 5.08%, with only 1,342 registered cases and 10 deaths since 1 March 2020.
