Freight trucks get another 15 days of toll-free bypass transit

The National Transit Institute (Intrant) is pleased with the preliminary results of the first 15-days of a pilot program that has allowed cargo transporters to travel free on the Santo Domingo bypass road.

The “Ponte en Ruta DN” plan seeks to decongestion city traffic sending traffic north of the city onto the Santo Domingo bypass tolls road. The traffic specialists at Intrant are testing for the number of cargo vehicles, traffic at the ring road toll stations of the ring road, permits requested and granted to travel through the cargo vehicles restricted access zone, report of infractions, travel times, variation in emission levels and traffic accidents involving cargo vehicles.

The preliminary data shows that on average, the number of cargo vehicles entering/leaving the city is 27,181 vehicles/day. During the first two weeks of the pilot program, the load was reduced to 21,908 vehicles/day, which represents 5,300 less heavy vehicles per day, down 20%. In key areas such as the Malecon, the decline in traffic was down 50%.

The report also details that the reduction of cargo vehicles for the first two weeks on the Mella and Duarte bridges was 30%.

The analysis of the data indicates that the presence of vehicles with more than four (4) axles within the city was also reduced.

For the duration of the pilot program, freight trucks are exempt from paying tolls.
