David Ortiz to be inducted in Dominican Hall of Fame; he tops list of eligible candidates on 2022 Baseball Hall of Fame ballot

David Ortiz will be inducted into Dominican Sport Hall of Fame in Santo Domingo on Sunday, 14 November 2021. Others who will be inducted on the same evening are Olympic medalists Felix Sanchez (gold in 400 m hurdles in Athens 2004 and London 2012) and taekwondo fighter Gabriel Mercedes (silver in Beijing Olympics 2008).

David Ortiz is also on the ballot just sent out for the 2022 Cooperstown Hall of Fame.

David Ortiz is regarded as the most outstanding designated hitter of all times. Ortiz was part of the Dominican trio (pitcher Pedro Martínez, sluggers Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz) that helped deliver the MLB World Series to the Boston Red Sox in 2004, that team’s first championship in 86 years. Ortiz was also a member of Boston’s World Series championship teams in 2007, 2008 and 2013. He led the Amerian League with 56 home runs in 2006 and three times in RBI in 2005, 2006 and the final year of his 20-year career in 2016. His 1,785 RBI rank 23rd all-time.

David Ortiz last played for the Boston Red Sox during the 2016 season. In that campaign, Ortiz capped off a remarkable career batting .315 on the year, 38 homers, and leading the league in doubles (48), RBI (127), slugging (.620), and OPS (1.021).

Joining Ortiz on the 2022 Cooperstown Hall of Fame ballot is another Dominican, Alex Rodriguez, one of baseball’s all-time leading sluggers from 1994-2016. Rodriguez’s 696 home runs rank 4th on the all-time list. He was a three-time American League MVP (2003, 2005, 2007) and 14-time All-Star and led the AL in home runs five times (2001-2003, 2005, 2007).

As explained in Wikipedia, players are currently inducted into the US Baseball Hall of Fame through election by either the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (or BBWAA), or the Veterans Committee, which now consists of four subcommittees, each of which considers and votes for candidates from a separate era of baseball.
