
The Ministry of Education is flush in cash. It is announcing it will be paying its administrative employees a 14th wage. In the Dominican Republic, most formal employees receive 13 wages — a monthly wage, and then an extra month wage in Christmas.
The Ministry of Education could be starting a new trend in government. While businesses have to turn in a profit to pay their employees more, the government just needs to collect more taxes to benefit the employees. The Dominican government is the country’s main employer. Wasteful spending has characterized Dominican government for years.
The Ministry of Education is the government department to receive the largest budget allocations in the Dominican Republic. The Ministry was assigned 4% of GDP to better education in the Dominican Republic. Standardized tests, nevertheless, show that all the extra cash has not added to the quality of the graduates of the public education system. But the extra cash will now mean a merrier Christmas for the Ministry of Education employees.
