Women’s groups protest outside Congress on the World Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women

To commemorate International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, representatives of social organizations marched on 25 November 2021 for a life free of violence in the Dominican Republic.

On the day that commemorates the 61st anniversary of the cruel murder of the Mirabal sisters, the women’s groups demanded the decriminalization of the three grounds for allowing abortion, the reincorporation in the Penal Code of the protection against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and all gender-based violence. They also demanded the approval of the Comprehensive Organic Law against Violence, which has been shelved in Congress for years.

The organizations emphatically demanded the immediate cessation of arbitrary and inhumane detention and the deportation and family separation of pregnant Haitian migrant women.

The manifesto, read in the company of supporting legislators, assured that violence is present in the mistreatment women suffer in the health system and in the denial of integral sexual education in the Dominican educational system. The women’s groups said the present state of affairs “subjects women to the risk of death with a legislative power that tries to keep abortion criminalized in all circumstances, and a Judicial Branch that is marked by patriarchal thinking, to avoiding the judicialization of cases.”

The organizations expressed that this 25 November “we honor the Mirabal Sisters with our struggle for real changes to guarantee the life, health, dignity and integrity of all women, which is to guarantee the life, health and progress of the whole society”.

The protest march began at 9:30am on Enrique Jimenez Moya Avenue, corner of Mirador Sur Avenue and ended with the rally at the Plazoleta of the National Congress.
