Covid is still with us; prevention needs to continue over the holidays

Mario Lama / Servicio Nacional de Salud

Epidemiological Bulletin #629 reports on a fifth consecutive day of no Covid-19 related deaths. The 4-week positivity rate has been consistently declining. Yet, the director of the National Health Service (SNS), Mario Lama, warns citizens people need to continue to avoid crowds during the Christmas festivities.

“The restrictive measures have been lifted. We now need what is called as citizen commitment, that people continue to take care of themselves by using masks and avoiding crowds,” said Dr. Lama.

Dr. Lama also urges those not vaccinated with the two doses to get the shots. He said the recent Yale University Heterovac study has proven the effectiveness of the two Sinovac + Pfizer booster combination.

“The vaccines have proven to be effective, they have proven to be safe, and we have enough vaccines available in the system,” added Dr. Lama.

The head of the SNS informed that all the hospitals of the public health system are being reinforced for the Christmas holidays, with emphasis on the areas of hospitalization and intensive care.

“The supply of necessary medicines and the different emergencies is also being made to public hospitals especially because at this time of the year there is an increase in traffic accidents, an important cause of mortality,” clarified the doctor.

In the Dominican Republic, the impact of the Delta variant has been mild and is dissipating. The Ministry of Public Health says the Delta strain has been found in 27 of the 31 provinces and the National District.

Also speaking during the Wednesday, 8 December 2021 Covid-19 health press conference, Dr. Ronald Skewes, director of Epidemiology at the Ministry of Public Health said the short duration of the fourth wave in which Delta variant has dominated means that the country is protected, “but we need to continue strengthening this,” he stressed, also insisting people get vaccinated and those that have been vaccinated get the booster shot.
