The Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture will receive technical advice from the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) to develop sustainability actions in agricultural work, mitigate the environmental impact of this important sector and develop forestry in the country.
Environment Minister Orlando Jorge Mera described this cooperation as transcendental, highlighting Embrapa’s experience in reforestation, seed bank management and species development. The Dominican Republic has the only seed bank in the Caribbean.
Jorge Mera said that the agreement provides technical assistance in climate change matters and specialized knowledge in forestry.
He said the signing of the agreement opens the doors to technical cooperation. The first Brazilian technicians are expected in Santo Domingo in January 2022.
Jorge Mera is confident that the support of Embrapa technicians will translate into an increase in the country’s forest coverage, which currently stands at 42.8%.
Orlando Jorge Mera pointed out that the pact complies with the instructions of President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, that agriculture and livestock raising be carried out under the strictest respect for the environment and natural resources.
Embrapa is a Brazilian state-owned research corporation affiliated with the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture. Since its start in 1973, it has been dedicated to develop technologies, knowledge and technical-scientific information aimed at Brazilian agriculture and livestock.
