Ministry of Agriculture and FAO launch Digital Agricultural Information System

The Ministry of Agriculture and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations recently launched the Digital Agricultural Information System (Sidiagro). The online platform digitizes data on the planting, harvesting and produce in the Dominican Republic.

“This digital platform will provide real-time information on the status of crops, their availability, quantity and yield, which will enable the government to formulate better agricultural policies,” said Agriculture Minister Limber Cruz.

At the ceremony, FAO representative in the Dominican Republic, Rodrigo Castañeda handed over 500 electronic tablets and computer equipment donated by FAO to be used by extension workers to enter agricultural data into the new system.

“It is a source of pride to be in a country that is committed to joining the digitalization process. There is a huge difference between countries that make public policy decisions based on updated information and those that do not,” said the FAO representative.

Ministry of Agriculture extension technicians are receiving training in digitization and online technology to facilitate the reorganization process of the Technical Assistance and Agricultural Innovation Service of the Dominican Republic.
