Chamber of Deputies votes on bond placements; Penal Code will be on the agenda in January 2022

The Chamber of Deputies had notified it would be on vacation from 20 December to 5 January 2022. But the deputies returned to work on Tuesday.

During the session, the deputies authorized that the Executive Branch issue and place bonds for up to RD$284 billion or equivalent in foreign currency. The debt securities will support the 2022 National Budget spending.

The initiative sent by the Executive Branch was approved in first reading with a vote of 91 votes in favor and 16 against, and in second reading with 90 and 15, respectively.

The bill did not have the vote of the deputies of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) who withdrew before the bill was approved. Likewise, it had the negative vote of the great majority of the legislators of the opposition parties present, who were against this request by the Presidency.

The bill, which authorizes the Ministry of Hacienda to carry out the operations, had already passed in the Senate. It now moves to the Presidency for enactment procedures.

Alfredo Pacheco, president of the Chamber of Deputies, says that the Penal Code bill will be presented to the floor in a session now called for January 2022.
