Visits to La Victoria jail suspended to stop possible outbreak of Covid-19

At a time when Covid-19 spread is at record lows in the Dominican Republic, the authorities said visits will not be allowed at the La Victoria Jail, the largest in the country. Several inmates have cold symptoms that are suspect of being Covid-19. The authorities ordered a major PCR testing operation at the jail and until the results are in, as of 23 December 2021, visits are suspended.

There are around 28,000 persons in jails in the Dominican Republic. From March 2020 to date, there have been about 1,600 cases of Covid-19 reported. As of mid-December, 89% of all inmates and staff had at least two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine.

Local physicians have alerted of an outbreak of influenza.
