Water sports suspended in Puerto Plata

Due to extreme weather conditions, the Committee for Prevention, Mitigation and Emergency Response of Puerto Plata banned all aquatic activities on beaches and rivers in the north coast province.

Puerto Plata Civil Defense director Whascar García ordered sea, river, and high mountain area excursions and water sports, in general, to be temporarily suspended for safety purposes.

The north coast is impacted by a passing trough and a cold front moving south from North America.

García says the weather systems will be affecting the Atlantic coast for the next 72 hours, according to the Weather Office (Onamet).

Since Sunday evening (30 January 2022), dangerous swells have been affecting the north coast. Breaking waves of 8 to 14 feet high are expected. The frontal weather system is bringing increased cloudiness and torrential rains for coming days.
