The president of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), former President Danilo Medina announced on Sunday, 6 February 2022 that the party needs to return to government to complete the government program left pending when it lost the presidency in the 2020 election. The PLD for 20 years the official party.
The leadership of the party presented the six presidential aspirants who will compete for the presidential candidacy of the party. The party acknowledged they will be the only party that does not present a former presidential candidate on its ballot during the 2024 general elections.
The pact was signed by candidates Abel Martínez, who is the mayor of Santiago; Maritza Hernández, party leader; Margarita Cedeño, former Vice President (2012-2020) and First Lady (2004-2012); former Attorney General, Minister of Environment and senator for Santiago Francisco Domínguez Brito; Luis de León, former Deputy Minister of Education and Karen Ricardo, former congresswoman.
The Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) secretary general, Charlie Mariotti stressed the “vision of renovation” the PLD will bring to the 2024 election. He said the other parties are expected to bring “tired faces, old ideas, projects that have already had their time. That is what they offer, one has already gone (referring to Leonel Fernandez) and the other is in power (referring to Luis Abinader).”
On Sunday, 6 February 2022, the Central Committee reached an agreement that states that whoever wins in the consultation to be held on 16 October 2022, will not be able to complain that he/she will not have behind him/her all the party leadership to win the elections of 2024.
The PLD says electronic voting will be used in the consultation to determine which of the aspirants has a greater acceptance. Mariotti said the universe of who would vote in this consultation to be held in October 2022 is yet to be decided. He said the party leadership is considering having an open electoral roll, where all persons registered to vote will be able to vote for the PLD pre-candidate of their choice, as long as they do not appear in the lists of militants of the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP) of former President Fernandez or the ruling Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM).
This method was the detonator of the party’s division that led former President Leonel Fernández to form the People’s Force (FP) party after denouncing he was the victim of electronic fraud in the party primary in October 2019.
